In 2022, we explored some of the country’s most stunning landscapes and stayed in a range of accommodations that perfectly complemented our journey. From luxurious lodges in the heart of the desert to cozy guesthouses near Namibia’s top attractions, each place offered its own unique experience. In this post, we’ll share the highlights of where we stayed, along with direct links to help you plan your own adventure. Whether you’re seeking comfort, adventure, or a mix of both, these accommodations will make your Namibian journey unforgettable.
Erindi
Erindi Old Trader's Lodge: A Wildlife Haven in Erindi Game Reserve
During our stay in Namibia, we had the pleasure of spending a few nights at Erindi Old Trader's Lodge, nestled within the vast and beautiful Erindi Game Reserve. The lodge offers a prime location for wildlife enthusiasts, as it overlooks a large waterhole that attracts a steady stream of animals throughout the day. From the comfort of both our dining room and private suite, we were treated to incredible up-close views of elephants, giraffes, and other wildlife coming to drink, often just a stone’s throw away. It truly felt like being in the heart of nature without leaving the luxury of the lodge.
Full-Board Experience and Convenient DiningThe lodge operates on a full-board basis, meaning all meals are provided, so we never had to worry about where to eat. Each meal was served with care, offering a variety of local and international dishes. Dining here was more than just about the food — it was an opportunity to soak in the scenery, with the waterhole in clear view, creating a perfect backdrop as we enjoyed our meals.
Unforgettable Safari ExperiencesOne of the highlights of staying at Erindi Old Trader's Lodge was the opportunity to embark on daily safaris. Each day, we joined two safaris, one early in the morning at 6 a.m. and another in the afternoon at 4 p.m. These expertly guided game drives were led by knowledgeable rangers who made the experience both informative and exciting. What set these safaris apart was the use of advanced tracking equipment, which allowed the rangers to estimate the location of various animals in the vast reserve. This significantly enhanced our chances of spotting the Big Five—and we were fortunate enough to see lions, elephants, and rhinos during our drives.
Erindi Old Trader's Lodge provided a perfect balance of comfort, adventure, and the thrill of being immersed in Namibia's stunning wildlife. If you're looking for an unforgettable safari experience in Namibia, this lodge is a fantastic choice.
Windhoek
A Short Stay in Windhoek: Relaxing at Olive Grove Guesthouse
Though we only spent one night in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, we made the most of our brief stay. With limited time to explore the city, we opted for a leisurely evening, strolling around the local area and enjoying a quiet dinner at our guesthouse.
Our home for the night was the charming Olive Grove Guesthouse, a peaceful retreat located in a quiet residential area. The guesthouse exudes a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a long journey. One of the standout features was the beautiful swimming pool, surrounded by a serene courtyard—a refreshing sight in the warm Namibian climate. Although we didn’t have much time to take a dip, the pool area provided a lovely space to relax and take in the tranquil ambiance.
Comfort and Convenience at Olive GroveThe guesthouse offers bed-and-breakfast accommodations, and we were pleasantly surprised by how comfortable and well-appointed our room was. The decor was simple yet stylish, with earthy tones that matched the natural surroundings. Breakfast was included in our stay, but we also discovered that Olive Grove has its own in-house restaurant, offering a convenient option for dinner. Given the limited time we had in Windhoek, we decided to dine at the guesthouse, which turned out to be a wonderful choice. The restaurant served a delicious menu with both local and international dishes, making our meal a perfect way to wind down after a day of travel.
While we didn’t have the chance to explore more of Windhoek during this visit, Olive Grove Guesthouse provided a comfortable and relaxing stopover. It’s a great option for travelers seeking a peaceful retreat with easy access to the city’s amenities.
Sesriem
A Unique Stay at Sossus Dune Lodge
Our time at Sossus Dune Lodge was truly unforgettable. As the first exclusive lodge situated within Namibia's Naukluft National Park, it offers a one-of-a-kind experience that blends luxury with nature. Managed by Namibia Wildlife Resorts, the lodge provides a front-row seat to the region's spectacular landscapes and stunning night skies. One of the lodge’s greatest advantages is its prime location—guests can access Sossusvlei even before sunrise, bypassing the need to wait at the park’s entrance gate.
The lodge features 23 desert chalets and two honeymoon suites, all connected by wooden walkways that allow you to immerse yourself in the desert's beauty. The accommodations are spacious and beautifully designed, with each chalet boasting a private terrace that offers sweeping views of the Sossusvlei dunes. Inside, the rooms are equipped with a large, well-appointed bathroom and all the comforts needed for a relaxing stay, despite being in such a remote location.
We spent two nights in one of the honeymoon suites, which came with an expansive terrace and an outdoor lounger—perfect for stargazing under the breathtaking desert sky. The serenity and natural beauty of the lodge made it feel like a desert version of a Maldives resort, where tranquility and luxury meet in the heart of nature.
The lodge’s restaurant served delicious meals that enhanced our experience, while the highlight was the beautiful swimming pool. Complete with sun loungers, it offered a refreshing escape after a day of exploring, allowing us to relax and unwind amidst the vast desert landscape.
Swakopmund
During our stay in Swakopmund, we chose to lodge at the Delight Swakopmund, a part of the Gondwana Collection Namibia hotel group, conveniently situated right in the heart of the city center. This charming hotel boasts numerous rooms and private parking facilities, ensuring a comfortable stay for guests. The breakfast offered at the hotel was not only delightful but also served as a perfect start to our day of exploration.
While the hotel itself does not feature an on-site restaurant, we found it incredibly convenient that there are several dining options within walking distance. This allowed us to easily explore and indulge in the local culinary scene without straying too far from our accommodation.
Damaraland
Our Stay at Damara Mopane Lodge
During our visit to the region, we had the pleasure of staying at Damara Mopane Lodge. Opened in November 2010, the lodge offers 55 charming chalets, each featuring a comfortable double room with air conditioning and a private bathroom. What makes this lodge truly unique is the way the chalets are spread out across lush, vibrant gardens filled with vegetables and herbs, all enclosed by a low wall.
The lodge also boasts a sunset bar, a perfect spot to enjoy an aperitif while taking in the stunning views of the surrounding nature. As the sun sets, the landscape is bathed in warm, golden light, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
The lodge’s restaurant is another highlight, serving delicious dishes made with fresh ingredients harvested directly from the surrounding gardens. The farm-to-table approach adds a special touch to each meal, making our stay even more enjoyable.
Etosha
Okaukuejo Rest Camp: A Historic Stay in Etosha National Park
Located in the southern region of Etosha National Park, Okaukuejo Rest Camp is steeped in history, having originally been established as a military outpost in 1901. Today, it serves as a popular base for wildlife enthusiasts eager to experience the park’s incredible biodiversity. One of the camp's standout features is its proximity to a large waterhole, which becomes a hub of wildlife activity from the early morning hours. After sunset, floodlights illuminate the waterhole, providing a rare opportunity to observe animals—particularly the endangered black rhinoceros—up close in their natural habitat.
Okaukuejo offers a broad selection of accommodations, from simple campsites to more luxurious options, catering to a variety of budgets and preferences. The camp is also well-equipped with essential amenities, including a petrol station and a shop stocked with supplies. For dining, the camp's restaurant and bar serve up refreshing drinks and a variety of tasty meals, making it easy to refuel after a long day of exploring. On hot days, the swimming pool offers a much-needed escape from the Namibian heat, allowing visitors to cool off in a tranquil setting.
For those looking to explore the park, Okaukuejo provides the option of a guided game drive with an experienced ranger, offering a chance to spot the iconic wildlife of Etosha. However, during our visit, we opted for the freedom of a self-drive safari, setting out in our rental car with a map in hand, in search of the Big Five. This adventure allowed us to explore at our own pace, discovering the incredible landscapes and wildlife that make Etosha such a unique destination.
Onguma Game Reserve
Onguma Nature Reserve: A Wildlife Haven Near Etosha National Park
Just 9 kilometers from the Namutoni gate on the eastern side of Etosha National Park, Onguma Nature Reserve spans an impressive 20,000 hectares of pristine wilderness. The reserve’s name, 'Onguma', fittingly translates to "the place where you never want to leave," and after spending time here, it’s easy to understand why. Home to over 30 species of animals, including kudu, giraffe, zebra, lion, and leopard, Onguma is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. The reserve recently welcomed a family of black rhinos, adding to its already rich diversity. For bird lovers, Onguma is especially magical during the summer months, when over 300 bird species flock to the area, transforming it into a vibrant birdwatching destination.
Safaris in Onguma are conducted in open jeeps, offering a guided exploration of the vast reserve. However, if you prefer a self-drive adventure, Onguma's proximity to the Etosha entrance makes it easy to combine both experiences. You can enjoy the reserve's wildlife and also venture into the national park to experience its renowned landscapes.
During our visit, we stayed for one night at the Onguma Bush Camp, a peaceful retreat that allowed us to relax and recharge after a day of exploration. The camp features a lovely restaurant where we enjoyed delicious meals, and it offers stunning views of a nearby waterhole, where wildlife frequently gathers to drink. Watching the animals from the comfort of the camp was an unforgettable experience. For those looking to explore more of the reserve, guests can join guided safaris, or for an additional fee, head into Etosha National Park for even more wildlife sightings.
Grootfontein
Roy's Rest Camp: A Convenient Stopover in Grootfontein
During our travels through Namibia, we spent one night at Roy's Rest Camp in Grootfontein, a perfect spot for a quick stopover on our way through the region. Located along the main route, Roy's Rest Camp offers a relaxed and rustic atmosphere, ideal for travelers looking for a comfortable place to rest.
The camp features a selection of cozy chalets and campsites, surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Namibian landscape. While simple, the accommodations are well-maintained, providing all the basics needed for a restful night. The camp also has a restaurant and bar, where we enjoyed a hearty meal after a long day of driving. The friendly, laid-back vibe made it an easy place to unwind before continuing our journey the next day.
Whether you're passing through or spending more time in the area, Roy's Rest Camp is a convenient and welcoming spot to recharge.
Divundu
Nestled approximately 20 km south of the Bagani Bridge on the western banks of the Okavango River, Ndhovu Lodge offers a serene escape with stunning views of the Caprivi region. The lodge features 10 luxurious safari tents, including one spacious family tent and the unique River Tent, each equipped with en-suite bathrooms and mosquito nets for a comfortable stay. For those seeking a bit more adventure, the River Tent is perched right on the water, offering a close encounter with wildlife, including hippos and crocodiles. You can relax on your private deck or try your luck at fishing for the famous tigerfish.
Our two-night stay at Ndhovu Lodge was a truly unforgettable experience. Each night, we could hear the sounds of hippos climbing up the riverbank, often just steps away from our tent. Their proximity added a thrilling touch to the adventure, and for safety, a ranger escorted us to our tent after dinner.
The lodge also offers excellent amenities, including a restaurant, lounge, bar, viewing deck, and a swimming pool. The meals were a highlight of our stay, with delicious local cuisine served in a welcoming, homely manner. Guests gathered around a long communal table, creating a warm, convivial atmosphere that made dining a truly delightful experience.
Kwando River
Namushasha River Lodge: A Tranquil Retreat on the Kwando River
We spent one night at Namushasha River Lodge, located in the eastern part of the Caprivi region, just 24 km south of Kongola. Perched on the banks of the Kwando River, the lodge offers stunning views of the water, with frequent sightings of hippos adding to the natural charm. The lodge boasts 24 comfortable bungalows, each equipped with a private bathroom, air conditioning, and mosquito nets, ensuring a restful stay.
The lodge’s amenities include a bar, a buffet-style restaurant with breathtaking views of the river and its resident hippos, a small pool with lounge chairs for relaxation, and a souvenir shop for mementos of the trip. The food at the restaurant was delicious, providing a satisfying end to our day.
Namushasha River Lodge also offers a range of activities, including game drives, boat safaris, and fishing tours. Having already experienced several inland game drives, we opted for another boat safari, which allowed us to further explore the rich wildlife and serene beauty of the river.
Kasane Botswana
Accommodation: River View Lodge
During our stay in Botswana, we enjoyed a night at River View Lodge, located on the scenic banks of the Chobe River. This lodge is a true oasis of tranquility, providing the perfect setting to relax and unwind after exploring the iconic landscapes of Chobe National Park. Guests can book various activities directly from the lodge, including the game drive that we opted for during our visit.
The 3-hour morning game drive took us deep into the heart of Chobe National Park, a vast expanse covering 11,000 square kilometers. The park is renowned for being home to the world’s largest elephant population, and setting out early in the morning gave us the chance to witness the park’s abundant wildlife. We saw herds of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, and antelopes, and with a bit of luck, visitors might even spot lions, leopards, or wild dogs.
In addition to game drives, the lodge offers boat safaris on the Chobe River or the option of a day trip to Victoria Falls, located just an hour's drive away. Both experiences are perfect for making the most of your time in this incredible part of Africa.
Victoria Falls Zimbabwe
Bayete Guest Lodge: A Cozy Retreat Near Victoria Falls
Located just minutes from the world-famous Victoria Falls, Bayete Guest Lodge offers a charming and comfortable retreat for travelers looking to explore this iconic natural wonder.
